Every person, every community has its secrets. Usually they are locked away in our minds, but one also finds them concealed in documents and objects: what lies hidden in the secret writings of Batak ritual specialists? What is the meaning of the female figure on a Iatmul men’s house?

Feast of things
7 November 2018, 18:15 - 20:45 PM

Here you approach the exhibits in “Take your pick” from very different angles. Take a guided tour or choose to visit a conservator in her studio and get to see the objects from really close-up. Or else become inventive and create a work of your own, inspired by a museum object of your choice. Write, paint, film – anything goes, the material is there, it’s all up to you! Also attending the event are the word artist Amina Abdulkadir and the musician Fernando Noriega. The two will present their works – along with you, if you like – as a highlight towards the end of the evening.

> With Karin Kaufmann, curator of the exhibition “Take your pick”; Stephanie Wümmers, Department of Conservation; Sabine Rotach, Learning and Programmes; Regina Mathez, studio.

Number of participants limited; please register by 30.10.2018 under 061 266 56 00 or at info@mkb.notexisting@nodomain.comch

Big doesn’t mean the same thing everywhere. The guided tour tells you more about the cultural dimensions of bigness, with power and status providing two good examples. But how is size defined and measured? And what’s so impressive about big things?

125 years Museum der Kulturen Basel
Passing the Baton to the Basel Minster
9 December 2018, 10:00 AM - 19:30 PM

The eventful year ends with a token of good neighbourliness: we pass on the anniversary baton to the Basel Minster, which in 2019 is celebrating its consecration one thousand years ago. Together with Minster Reverend Caroline Schröder we cross the Minster Square in a festive procession – with a boat from our collections in tow to symbolize the crossing. Temporarily the vessel will lie at anchor in the nave of the Minster.

A rich and varied programme throughout the day in the Museum and the Minster.

Every culture and age entertains its own perception of heavenly bodies, as objects like the statue of the Aztec sun god Tonatiuh or the Indonesian horoscope go to show. The guided tour explores the many ways celestial bodies were and are understood and put to use, ranging from everyday items to venerated ritual objects.
